Artist Statement & Bio
I was born and raised in Nigeria, where my upbringing was split between Lagos State and Ogun State. These regions hold a wealth of memories that defined my childhood and early adolescence. While many moments were filled with the innocent joys of youth, my time there also exposed me to the harsher realities of life.
I don't necessarily do creative work on a day-to-day basis; I simply never leave home without my camera and extra rolls of film. During the weekend, I spend the whole day roaming the city. When I am not in class, studying or working, I instinctively find myself out and about with my camera. I usually don't have anything in mind to make images about it's more of an "I'll know it when I see it" situation most of the time. The images are from one of my few serious attempts to create a body of work that I can remember what it feels and look like to be a college student given my background. The images are in part a documentary for myself the events I participated in and in part a visualization of the American college experience. I want for these images to provide a visualization of a real American college experience what gives the viewer the feeling that they are not just looking at these images as images but as a college student replaying events they had attended.
